ABOUT

About Norwegian Krone / Japanese Yen

NOK/JPY is the exchange rate between the Norwegian krone and the Japanese yen. The price shows how many Japanese yen one Norwegian krone buys: when NOKJPY rises, the Norwegian krone is strengthening against the Japanese yen; when it falls, it is weakening.

NOK/JPY is a minor or exotic cross, so it usually trades with less liquidity and wider spreads than the majors and can move sharply around local news. The Norwegian krone is tied to oil and gas, Norway's main exports, and to flows from its large sovereign wealth fund. The Japanese yen has long been used as a funding currency because of Japan's low interest rates, and it often strengthens when markets turn risk-averse.

On Xellion's MT5 platform NOKJPY is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 Norwegian kroner; the pip size and value are shown in the MT5 contract specification.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by Norges Bank and the Bank of Japan, and expectations for where they go next
  • Crude oil and natural gas prices
  • Norges Bank policy and Norwegian inflation
  • Risk sentiment, as the yen is often treated as a safe haven
  • Comments or action from Japanese authorities on the exchange rate
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from Norway and Japan

FAQ

NOKJPY questions

What does the NOKJPY price mean?

It is the number of Japanese yen needed to buy one Norwegian krone. A rising price means the Norwegian krone is gaining against the Japanese yen; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is NOKJPY most active?

NOKJPY trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the Tokyo and London sessions, and especially in the hours when the two sessions overlap. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on NOKJPY?

Pip value on NOKJPY depends on the pip size in the MT5 contract specification and on the Japanese yen exchange rate against your account currency. Because Japanese yen are converted into your account currency, the value per pip changes as that rate moves.

How much margin do I need for one lot of NOKJPY?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 Norwegian kroner, so at 1:500 you need 200 NOK and at 1:100 you need 1,000 NOK, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
