Pip calculator

A pip is the smallest standard price move of an instrument. Knowing what one pip is worth in your own currency tells you how much each move costs or earns before you trade.

HOW TO USE

How to use the Pip calculator

  1. Choose the instrument you want to trade, for example EURUSD or XAUUSD.
  2. Enter your position size in lots (1 lot = 100,000 units for forex).
  3. Pick the currency your account is held in.
  4. Read the value of one pip, and of 10 pips, in your account currency.
WORKED EXAMPLE
  • Instrument: USDJPY at 150.00
  • Position: 0.5 lots
  • Account currency: USD
One pip on USDJPY is 0.01.
0.5 lots × 100,000 units × 0.01 = 500 JPY
500 JPY ÷ 150.00 = 3.33 USD

Each pip is worth about $3.33.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a pip?

A pip is the standard unit of price movement. For most currency pairs it is the fourth decimal place (0.0001); for pairs quoted in Japanese yen it is the second decimal place (0.01).

How much is one pip worth on one lot of EURUSD?

One standard lot of EURUSD is 100,000 euros, so one pip (0.0001) is worth 10 US dollars. In another account currency the value is converted at the current rate.

How is a pip measured on gold, indices and Bitcoin?

In this calculator a pip on XAUUSD is 0.01 (100 oz per lot, so $1 per lot), on XAGUSD 0.001 (5,000 oz per lot, so $5 per lot), and on indices and BTCUSD one full point per contract.

Why does pip value change for pairs like USDJPY?

When your account currency is not the quote currency of the pair, the pip value is converted at the current exchange rate, so it moves slightly as prices move.

Are the prices in the calculator live?

No. The calculator uses indicative reference prices. Your MT5 platform shows the live price and exact pip value for every trade.
