ABOUT

About Silver

Silver (XAGUSD) is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. It is both a precious metal and an industrial input, used in electronics, solar panels and medical products as well as jewellery, coins and bars.

That dual role means silver often follows gold when investors look for safety, but it also reacts to the economic cycle and to manufacturing demand. It is generally more volatile than gold, so its moves can be larger in both directions.

On Xellion's MT5 platform silver is traded as a CFD. One lot is 5,000 troy ounces, and you can go long or short without holding physical metal.

What moves the price

  • The gold price and the gold-to-silver ratio
  • US interest rates and the US dollar
  • Industrial demand, including solar and electronics
  • Manufacturing data from China and the United States
  • Mine supply, much of which comes as a by-product of other metals

FAQ

XAGUSD questions

Why does silver often move more than gold?

The silver market is smaller than the gold market and is driven by both investment and industrial demand, so changes in sentiment or the economic outlook can produce larger percentage moves.

What does a $0.01 move in silver mean for one lot?

One lot is 5,000 troy ounces, so a $0.01 move in XAGUSD changes the value of one lot by $50. On 0.01 lots the same move is worth $0.50.

What is the gold-to-silver ratio?

It is the gold price divided by the silver price, showing how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold. Traders watch it to judge whether silver looks cheap or expensive relative to gold.

When is silver most active?

Silver trades nearly 24 hours on weekdays, with the most activity usually during the London and New York sessions and around US economic data.
