About Gold
Gold (XAUUSD) is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. It has been used as money and a store of value for thousands of years, and today it is held by central banks, investors and jewellers around the world.
Because gold pays no interest, its appeal tends to rise when real interest rates fall and fade when they climb. It is also widely seen as a hedge against inflation, currency weakness and periods of financial or political stress.
On Xellion's MT5 platform you trade gold as a CFD, so you can take a position on the price rising or falling without buying or storing physical metal. One lot is 100 troy ounces.
What moves the price
- US real interest rates and Federal Reserve policy
- The strength of the US dollar

- Geopolitical tension and stress in financial markets

XAUUSD questions
Why is gold priced in US dollars?
Global gold trading has long been settled in US dollars, so XAUUSD is the benchmark quote and prices in other currencies are converted from it. That is also why a stronger dollar often weighs on gold.
What does a $1 move in gold mean for one lot?
One lot is 100 troy ounces, so a $1 move in XAUUSD changes the value of one lot by $100. On 0.01 lots the same move is worth $1.
When is gold most active?
Gold trades nearly 24 hours on weekdays. Activity usually picks up when London opens and is often highest while London and New York overlap, especially around major US data releases.
Is gold a safe investment?
Gold is often treated as a safe haven, but its price can still move sharply. Trading gold CFDs with leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and you can lose money quickly.
Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
