ABOUT

About Mexican Peso / Japanese Yen

MXN/JPY is the exchange rate between the Mexican peso and the Japanese yen. The price shows how many Japanese yen one Mexican peso buys: when MXNJPY rises, the Mexican peso is strengthening against the Japanese yen; when it falls, it is weakening.

MXN/JPY is a minor or exotic cross, so it usually trades with less liquidity and wider spreads than the majors and can move sharply around local news. The Mexican peso is one of the most traded emerging-market currencies and is closely linked to the US economy through trade. The Japanese yen has long been used as a funding currency because of Japan's low interest rates, and it often strengthens when markets turn risk-averse.

On Xellion's MT5 platform MXNJPY is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 Mexican pesos; the pip size and value are shown in the MT5 contract specification.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) and the Bank of Japan, and expectations for where they go next
  • US–Mexico trade and policy news
  • Banxico interest-rate decisions and Mexican inflation
  • Risk sentiment, as the yen is often treated as a safe haven
  • Comments or action from Japanese authorities on the exchange rate
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from Mexico and Japan
