ABOUT

About Hong Kong Dollar / Japanese Yen

HKD/JPY is the exchange rate between the Hong Kong dollar and the Japanese yen. The price shows how many Japanese yen one Hong Kong dollar buys: when HKDJPY rises, the Hong Kong dollar is strengthening against the Japanese yen; when it falls, it is weakening.

HKD/JPY is a minor or exotic cross, so it usually trades with less liquidity and wider spreads than the majors and can move sharply around local news. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar within a narrow band, so its moves against other currencies largely mirror the US dollar's. The Japanese yen has long been used as a funding currency because of Japan's low interest rates, and it often strengthens when markets turn risk-averse.

On Xellion's MT5 platform HKDJPY is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 Hong Kong dollars; the pip size and value are shown in the MT5 contract specification.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Bank of Japan, and expectations for where they go next
  • Hong Kong Monetary Authority operations to defend the peg
  • Capital flows into Hong Kong markets
  • Risk sentiment, as the yen is often treated as a safe haven
  • Comments or action from Japanese authorities on the exchange rate
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from Hong Kong and Japan

FAQ

HKDJPY questions

What does the HKDJPY price mean?

It is the number of Japanese yen needed to buy one Hong Kong dollar. A rising price means the Hong Kong dollar is gaining against the Japanese yen; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is HKDJPY most active?

Like all major FX pairs, HKDJPY trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the Tokyo session, when markets for both currencies are open.

How much is one pip worth on HKDJPY?

Pip value on HKDJPY depends on the pip size in the MT5 contract specification and on the Japanese yen exchange rate against your account currency. Because Japanese yen are converted into your account currency, the value per pip changes as that rate moves.

How much margin do I need for one lot of HKDJPY?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 Hong Kong dollars, so at 1:500 you need 200 HKD and at 1:100 you need 1,000 HKD, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
