ABOUT

About Swiss Franc / Japanese Yen

CHF/JPY is the exchange rate between the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen. The price shows how many Japanese yen one Swiss franc buys: when CHFJPY rises, the Swiss franc is strengthening against the Japanese yen; when it falls, it is weakening.

CHF/JPY is a cross pair: neither side is the US dollar, so its price reflects the balance between Switzerland and Japan directly. The Swiss franc is backed by Switzerland's stable economy and is widely treated as a safe-haven currency. The Japanese yen has long been used as a funding currency because of Japan's low interest rates, and it often strengthens when markets turn risk-averse.

On Xellion's MT5 platform CHFJPY is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 Swiss francs, and one pip is 0.01, as with other pairs quoted in yen.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Swiss National Bank and the Bank of Japan, and expectations for where they go next
  • Swiss inflation data
  • Swiss National Bank currency intervention and demand for safe havens
  • Risk sentiment, as the yen is often treated as a safe haven
  • Comments or action from Japanese authorities on the exchange rate
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from Switzerland and Japan

CHFJPY questions

What does the CHFJPY price mean?

It is the number of Japanese yen needed to buy one Swiss franc. A rising price means the Swiss franc is gaining against the Japanese yen; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is CHFJPY most active?

How much is one pip worth on CHFJPY?

A pip on CHFJPY is 0.01. On one standard lot of 100,000 Swiss francs that is 1,000 JPY per pip, converted into your account currency. The pip calculator works it out for any lot size.

How much margin do I need for one lot of CHFJPY?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 Swiss francs, so at 1:500 you need 200 CHF and at 1:100 you need 1,000 CHF, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
