ABOUT

About US Dollar / Swiss Franc

USD/CHF is the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Swiss franc. The price shows how many Swiss francs one US dollar buys: when USDCHF rises, the US dollar is strengthening against the Swiss franc; when it falls, it is weakening. Traders often call it "Swissy".

USD/CHF is one of the major currency pairs, all of which are quoted against the US dollar and are generally among the most liquid in the market. The US dollar is the world's main reserve currency and sits on one side of most foreign-exchange trades. The Swiss franc is backed by Switzerland's stable economy and is widely treated as a safe-haven currency.

On Xellion's MT5 platform USDCHF is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 US dollars, and one pip is 0.0001.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Federal Reserve and the Swiss National Bank, and expectations for where they go next
  • US inflation (CPI) and jobs reports such as Non-Farm Payrolls
  • US Treasury yields
  • Swiss inflation data
  • Swiss National Bank currency intervention and demand for safe havens
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from the United States and Switzerland

FAQ

USDCHF questions

What does the USDCHF price mean?

It is the number of Swiss francs needed to buy one US dollar. A rising price means the US dollar is gaining against the Swiss franc; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is USDCHF most active?

USDCHF trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the London and New York sessions, and especially in the hours when the two sessions overlap. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on USDCHF?

A pip on USDCHF is 0.0001. On one standard lot of 100,000 US dollars that is 10 CHF per pip, converted into your account currency. The pip calculator works it out for any lot size.

How much margin do I need for one lot of USDCHF?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 US dollars, so at 1:500 you need 200 USD and at 1:100 you need 1,000 USD, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
