ABOUT

About US Dollar / Chinese Yuan (offshore)

USD/CNH is the exchange rate between the US dollar and the offshore Chinese yuan. The price shows how many offshore Chinese yuan one US dollar buys: when USDCNH rises, the US dollar is strengthening against the offshore Chinese yuan; when it falls, it is weakening.

USD/CNH is an exotic pair, combining a major currency with an emerging or smaller-market currency, so it usually trades with less liquidity and wider spreads than the majors and can move sharply around local news. The US dollar is the world's main reserve currency and sits on one side of most foreign-exchange trades. The offshore yuan (CNH) trades outside mainland China and is influenced by the daily reference rate the People's Bank of China sets for the onshore yuan.

On Xellion's MT5 platform USDCNH is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 US dollars; the pip size and value are shown in the MT5 contract specification.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Federal Reserve and the People's Bank of China, and expectations for where they go next
  • US inflation (CPI) and jobs reports such as Non-Farm Payrolls
  • US Treasury yields
  • The People's Bank of China's daily yuan reference rate
  • Chinese growth, trade and credit data
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from the United States and China

FAQ

USDCNH questions

What does the USDCNH price mean?

It is the number of offshore Chinese yuan needed to buy one US dollar. A rising price means the US dollar is gaining against the offshore Chinese yuan; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is USDCNH most active?

USDCNH trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the Tokyo and New York sessions. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on USDCNH?

Pip value on USDCNH depends on the pip size in the MT5 contract specification and on the offshore Chinese yuan exchange rate against your account currency. Because offshore Chinese yuan are converted into your account currency, the value per pip changes as that rate moves.

How much margin do I need for one lot of USDCNH?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 US dollars, so at 1:500 you need 200 USD and at 1:100 you need 1,000 USD, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
