ABOUT

About British Pound / US Dollar

GBP/USD is the exchange rate between the British pound and the US dollar. The price shows how many US dollars one British pound buys: when GBPUSD rises, the British pound is strengthening against the US dollar; when it falls, it is weakening. Traders often call it "Cable".

GBP/USD is one of the major currency pairs, all of which are quoted against the US dollar and are generally among the most liquid in the market. The British pound is one of the oldest currencies still in use and is traded heavily in London, the largest forex centre. The US dollar is the world's main reserve currency and sits on one side of most foreign-exchange trades.

On Xellion's MT5 platform GBPUSD is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 British pounds, and one pip is 0.0001.

FAQ

GBPUSD questions

What does the GBPUSD price mean?

It is the number of US dollars needed to buy one British pound. A rising price means the British pound is gaining against the US dollar; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is GBPUSD most active?

GBPUSD trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the London and New York sessions, and especially in the hours when the two sessions overlap. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on GBPUSD?

A pip on GBPUSD is 0.0001. On one standard lot of 100,000 British pounds that is 10 USD per pip, converted into your account currency. The pip calculator works it out for any lot size.

How much margin do I need for one lot of GBPUSD?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 British pounds, so at 1:500 you need 200 GBP and at 1:100 you need 1,000 GBP, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
