ABOUT

About Australian Dollar / US Dollar

AUD/USD is the exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar. The price shows how many US dollars one Australian dollar buys: when AUDUSD rises, the Australian dollar is strengthening against the US dollar; when it falls, it is weakening. Traders often call it "Aussie".

AUD/USD is one of the major currency pairs, all of which are quoted against the US dollar and are generally among the most liquid in the market. The Australian dollar is closely linked to commodity exports such as iron ore and to demand from China, Australia's largest trading partner. The US dollar is the world's main reserve currency and sits on one side of most foreign-exchange trades.

On Xellion's MT5 platform AUDUSD is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 Australian dollars, and one pip is 0.0001.

What moves the price

  • Iron ore and other commodity prices

  • US Treasury yields
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from Australia and the United States

FAQ

AUDUSD questions

What does the AUDUSD price mean?

It is the number of US dollars needed to buy one Australian dollar. A rising price means the Australian dollar is gaining against the US dollar; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is AUDUSD most active?

AUDUSD trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the Sydney and New York sessions. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on AUDUSD?

A pip on AUDUSD is 0.0001. On one standard lot of 100,000 Australian dollars that is 10 USD per pip, converted into your account currency. The pip calculator works it out for any lot size.

How much margin do I need for one lot of AUDUSD?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 Australian dollars, so at 1:500 you need 200 AUD and at 1:100 you need 1,000 AUD, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
