ABOUT

About New Zealand Dollar / US Dollar

NZD/USD is the exchange rate between the New Zealand dollar and the US dollar. The price shows how many US dollars one New Zealand dollar buys: when NZDUSD rises, the New Zealand dollar is strengthening against the US dollar; when it falls, it is weakening. Traders often call it "Kiwi".

NZD/USD is one of the major currency pairs, all of which are quoted against the US dollar and are generally among the most liquid in the market. The New Zealand dollar reflects an economy built heavily on agricultural exports such as dairy, and it tends to move with global risk appetite. The US dollar is the world's main reserve currency and sits on one side of most foreign-exchange trades.

On Xellion's MT5 platform NZDUSD is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 New Zealand dollars, and one pip is 0.0001.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Federal Reserve, and expectations for where they go next
  • Dairy prices and other export data
  • Global risk sentiment
  • US inflation (CPI) and jobs reports such as Non-Farm Payrolls
  • US Treasury yields
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from New Zealand and the United States
