Share buyback
A share buyback occurs when a company repurchases its own shares, either in the market or through another permitted process. Repurchased shares may be cancelled or held in treasury, potentially reducing shares outstanding and affecting per-share measures without guaranteeing a price increase.
In a hypothetical buyback, a company repurchases and cancels 1 million of its 10 million outstanding shares, leaving 9 million outstanding.
