Heating oil
Heating oil is a refined petroleum fuel used mainly to heat buildings. Related futures benchmarks may specify ultra-low-sulfur diesel rather than traditional heating oil, so contract specifications matter; prices reflect crude costs, refining conditions, inventories and seasonal demand.
In a hypothetical winter, colder weather increases heating fuel demand while refinery maintenance limits supply, causing heating oil prices to rise relative to crude oil.
