Crude oil
Crude oil is unrefined petroleum extracted from underground reservoirs and processed into fuels and other products. Benchmarks such as Brent and West Texas Intermediate represent different specifications and delivery arrangements; prices respond to supply, demand, inventories and geopolitical developments.
In a hypothetical market, a refinery outage reduces demand for a local crude grade, causing its price to weaken relative to another benchmark.
