If you want to start forex trading in India, the hardest part is not opening an account – it is knowing what to do before, during and after your first trade. This guide gives you a practical, step-by-step route: what to learn, how to practise, which platform to use, how to deposit by UPI, how to place and manage your first trade, and how to withdraw.

It is written for complete beginners. Each step links to a more detailed guide if you want to go deeper.

Before you start: what forex trading is (and isn't)

Forex trading means buying one currency and selling another, aiming to gain from changes in the exchange rate. Online, it is usually traded as CFDs (contracts for difference), so you trade price movements without exchanging physical currency. Many platforms also offer gold (XAU/USD) and other markets on the same account.

What it isn't: a reliable income, a savings product or a shortcut. Prices can move against you quickly, and leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. Plan to start small and treat the first months as learning time. If the basics are new, read what is forex trading first.

How to start forex trading in India: the 10 steps at a glance

  1. Learn the core terms
  2. Decide how much you can afford to risk
  3. Practise on a free demo account
  4. Choose your platform
  5. Open a live forex trading account
  6. Verify your identity
  7. Deposit (UPI is usually fastest)
  8. Plan and place your first small trade
  9. Manage the trade and keep a journal
  10. Withdraw, review and scale up slowly

Step 1: Learn the core terms

You only need a handful of terms to start:

TermMeaning
Currency pairTwo currencies quoted against each other, e.g. EUR/USD
PipThe standard unit of price movement (0.0001 for most pairs)
LotTrade size; 0.01 is the smallest common size
SpreadDifference between buy and sell price – your main cost
LeverageControlling a larger position with less margin
Stop lossAn order that closes a losing trade at a level you choose
Take profitAn order that closes a winning trade at your target

Read what is a pip and play with the pip calculator until the numbers feel natural.

Step 2: Decide how much you can afford to risk

Before you think about strategies, decide two numbers:

  • Starting amount – money you could lose without it affecting your life. Many beginners start with the minimum.
  • Risk per trade – a small, fixed share of your account on any one trade (many traders use 1–2%).

With a $100 account and 1% risk, your maximum loss per trade is $1. That sounds tiny, but it keeps you in the game long enough to learn.

Step 3: Practise on a free demo account

A demo account uses live prices and virtual money. It is the best place for forex trading for beginners in India to learn the platform without risking money. On Xellion, choose Try a free demo on any page and open a demo on MetaTrader 5, in your browser or the MT5 mobile app – no deposit needed.

On a demo, practise:

  • placing market and pending orders,
  • setting and moving stop loss and take profit,
  • closing part of a position,
  • trading at different times of day.

Aim for at least 30 planned demo trades with a written reason for each. Our guide to demo and paper trading explains what to practise and when to move on.

Step 4: Choose your platform

Most brokers offer one or more of these:

PlatformBest forOn Xellion
MetaTrader 5 (MT5)Charts, indicators, Expert AdvisorsYes – server Xellion-Live
Web traderTrading in a browser, nothing to installXellion WebTrader
Mobile appTrading plus deposits and withdrawals on your phoneXellion app (iOS, Android)
Trading platform types and what Xellion offers

All three use the same Xellion account. Set-up steps are in our MT5 download and login guide.

Step 5: Open a live forex trading account

When you are comfortable on the demo, open a live forex trading account. On Xellion there are three account types:

AccountMinimum first depositSpreads fromCommission
Standard$500.9 pipsNone
Raw Spread$2500.1 pips$3.50 per lot per side
Zero Spread$7500.0 pips$5.50 per lot per side
Xellion account types: minimum first deposit, spreads and commission

For most beginners, the Standard account is the simplest start: low minimum, no commission. Compare all three on the accounts page. Note that scalping and arbitrage are not permitted under the Customer Agreement, and an inactivity fee of $50 per month applies after 90 days without activity.

Step 6: Verify your identity

Brokers ask for identity verification (KYC) before you can withdraw. Have these ready:

  • a clear photo ID,
  • a recent proof of address,
  • details that match the name on your bank or UPI account.

Do this straight after sign-up. Xellion usually checks documents within 2 business days, so it will be done before you need your first withdrawal.

Step 7: Deposit – UPI is usually fastest

For Indian clients, Xellion lists three deposit methods:

MethodSpeedMinimum
UPIInstant$50
Bank transferWithin 1 business day$100
Crypto (USDT, BTC, ETH)After network confirmation$10

Deposits must come from an account in your own name. Xellion charges no currency conversion fees; your bank or payment app may charge its own. Full details are on the funding page. If you are still choosing a broker, compare UPI support and withdrawal times in our guide to the best forex trading apps in India.

Step 8: Plan and place your first small trade

Write the plan before you click:

  1. Pair: start with one major, such as EUR/USD.
  2. Time: trade when the market is active – the London session and the London–New York overlap (roughly 13:30–22:30 IST in winter). See forex market timings in India.
  3. News: check the economic calendar and avoid entering just before a major release.
  4. Direction and reason: buy or sell, and why, in one sentence.
  5. Stop loss and take profit: set both before entry.
  6. Size: use the position size calculator so the loss at your stop equals your chosen risk.

Then place the order – usually 0.01 lots for a first live trade.

Step 9: Manage the trade and keep a journal

  • Don't move your stop loss further away if the price goes against you.
  • Let the trade reach your stop or your target unless your reason for the trade has clearly changed.
  • After the trade closes, write down entry, exit, result and one lesson.

A simple spreadsheet journal is enough. After 20–30 live trades you will see patterns – for example, that you trade better at certain times or on certain pairs.

Step 10: Withdraw, review and scale up slowly

Test the withdrawal process early, even with a small amount. On Xellion, withdrawals go back by the method you used to deposit and to an account in your own name; UPI deposits are paid out by bank transfer. The funding page lists bank withdrawals at about 15–20 minutes and crypto withdrawals as instant. Our guide to forex withdrawals in India walks through each step.

Only increase your trade size when your journal shows a consistent process over many trades – not after one good week.
