Paper trading – also called demo trading or virtual trading – lets you buy and sell on real market prices with virtual money. Nothing you do can cost you a rupee, which makes it the best way to learn how a trading platform works before you put real money in.
This guide explains how demo trading works, how to open a free forex demo account, what to practise, and how to know when you are ready to go live.
What is paper trading?
A demo account is a copy of a real trading account, loaded with virtual funds. You see the same live prices, use the same charts and place the same kinds of orders as a live trader. The difference is that profits and losses are not real.
People in India often search for a “trading app without investment”. A demo account is exactly that: you can learn to trade forex, gold and other CFDs without depositing anything.
Paper trading app vs demo account: is there a difference?
The terms are used almost interchangeably:
| Term | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Paper trading | Practising with virtual money, originally on paper, now in apps |
| Demo account | A broker-provided practice account on its trading platform |
| Virtual trading app | An app that simulates trading, sometimes as a game or contest |
For forex and gold, a broker demo account is the most realistic option, because you use the actual platform – such as MetaTrader 5 – that you would use with real money.
How to open a free forex demo account with Xellion
- Choose Try a free demo on any Xellion page.
- Pick MetaTrader 5 in your browser (nothing to install) or the MT5 mobile app.
- Open a demo account in MT5 – it asks for a few details – and note the login, password and server it shows.
- Start trading with virtual funds.
No deposit is needed. If you are new to MT5, follow our MT5 download and login guide.
What to practise on a demo account
A demo is only useful if you practise with a plan. Work through these steps:
1. Learn the platform
- Add instruments to Market Watch.
- Open charts on different timeframes.
- Place market orders and pending orders (buy limit, sell stop).
- Set and move a stop loss and take profit.
- Close part of a position.
2. Understand position size
Most beginner mistakes come from trading too big. Use the position size calculator and the margin calculator to see how much margin a trade uses and how much a pip move is worth. Read what is a pip if the term is new.
3. Learn when markets move
Trade during different sessions and notice the difference. The London session and the London–New York overlap (roughly 18:30–22:30 IST in winter) are usually far more active than the early morning. See forex market timings in India.
4. Watch the news
Keep the economic calendar open and see how EUR/USD and gold react to US jobs and inflation data.
5. Keep a trading journal
For every demo trade, note:
- why you entered,
- where your stop loss and target were,
- the result,
- what you would do differently.
After 30–50 trades, your journal shows you what is working and what isn't.
The limits of demo trading
Demo trading is a great teacher, but it is not the same as trading with real money:
- Emotions are different. Losing virtual money doesn't feel like losing your own. Many traders find their discipline slips once real money is involved.
- Fills can differ. In fast markets, live orders can be filled at slightly different prices (slippage) than on a demo.
- Virtual balances can be unrealistic. If your demo has a large balance and you plan to start live with a small amount, practise with a position size that matches the amount you will actually deposit.
When are you ready to go live?
There is no fixed rule, but these signs suggest you are ready to try a small live account:
- You can place, modify and close trades without thinking about the buttons.
- You always use a stop loss.
- You size every trade before you place it.
- You have a written plan and a journal of at least a few dozen demo trades.
- You understand that you can lose the money you deposit.
Going live: start small with UPI
When you are ready, you don't need a large amount. On Xellion:
- The Standard account starts from $50.
- UPI deposits are instant, from $50.
- Bank withdrawals are listed at about 15–20 minutes on the funding page.
- You keep using the same platforms you practised on.

Starting small lets you experience real trading – including your own emotions – while keeping the amount at risk low. You can keep your demo account and use it to test new ideas alongside your live account.
Common demo trading mistakes
| Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|
| Using the full virtual balance on one trade | Risk a small, fixed share per trade |
| Trading without a stop loss | Set a stop loss on every trade |
| Over-trading because it's “free” | Limit yourself to a few planned trades a day |
| Ignoring news | Check the economic calendar before trading |
| Never switching to live | Move to a small live account once you have a tested plan |
