Forex trading is buying one currency while selling another, to try to profit from changes in the exchange rate between them. You always trade a pair, such as EUR/USD, and your result depends on how many pips the price moves and how large your position (lot size) is. Leverage lets you open a bigger position than your deposit, which magnifies losses as well as gains.
This guide explains the building blocks in plain language: currency pairs, pips, lots, leverage and margin, the costs you pay, and the hours that matter in IST. It ends with a step-by-step way to start that puts a free demo first and real money second. Every Xellion fact below comes from our accounts and funding pages (checked 3 November 2026).
What is forex trading?
Forex (foreign exchange, or FX) is the global market where currencies are exchanged. Banks, companies, funds and individual traders all take part, and the market runs 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday because trading passes from one financial centre to the next.
Most individual traders don't swap physical currency. They trade a contract on the price, such as a CFD, through a platform like MetaTrader 5. You can open a position that gains if the pair rises (long) or one that gains if it falls (short). Either way, a move against you is a loss.
How do currency pairs work?
A pair shows how much of the second currency (the quote) one unit of the first currency (the base) costs. If EUR/USD is 1.1000, one euro costs 1.10 US dollars. Buying EUR/USD means you expect the euro to strengthen against the dollar; selling means you expect it to weaken.
| Type | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Major pairs | The US dollar against another large currency; usually the most traded | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, AUD/USD |
| Cross pairs | Two large currencies without the US dollar | EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY |
| Exotic pairs | A large currency against a smaller or emerging-market one; often wider spreads | EUR/TRY, EUR/ZAR |
Many beginners start with a major such as EUR/USD, because majors usually have the deepest liquidity and the lowest spreads. The glossary explains major pairs, cross pairs and every other term in this guide.
What are pips and lots?
A pip is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. A lot is the size of your trade: one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, which is the contract size Xellion lists for its currency pairs.
Together they decide what a move is worth. On EUR/USD, where the US dollar is the quote currency, the pip value is fixed in dollars:
| Lot size | Units of EUR | Value of 1 pip | Value of a 20-pip move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.00 (standard lot) | 100,000 | $10 | $200 |
| 0.10 (mini lot) | 10,000 | $1 | $20 |
| 0.01 (micro lot) | 1,000 | $0.10 | $2 |
This is why beginners usually start with micro or mini lots: the same 20-pip move costs $2 instead of $200. For other pairs, the pip calculator works out the value for you. For a deeper explanation, read what is a pip.
What is leverage in forex, and why is it risky?
Leverage lets you control a position larger than the money you put up. The money set aside to hold the position is called margin. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, because your profit or loss is based on the full position size, not on the margin.
Take a 0.10-lot EUR/USD trade at 1.1000. The position is worth €10,000, or about $11,000:
| Leverage | Margin needed | Result of a 50-pip move against you |
|---|---|---|
| 1:30 | About $367 | −$50 |
| 1:100 | $110 | −$50 |
| 1:500 | $22 | −$50 |
Notice the last column: the loss is the same at every leverage level. What higher leverage changes is how large a position you can open with a small deposit. A trader with $50 who opens far bigger positions than this can lose the whole balance in a small move. Xellion offers leverage up to 1:2000 depending on account and country, but most beginners use far less than the maximum. Check the margin for any trade with the margin calculator and read the glossary entry on leverage.
Every Xellion account includes negative balance protection: your losses cannot exceed the money in your account. It limits the worst case; it doesn't make losses less likely.
When can you trade forex in India (IST)?
The forex market is open 24 hours a day on weekdays, but the busiest hours for Indian traders are in the afternoon and evening IST. The London–New York overlap is usually the most active window.
| Session | Time in India (IST) | What beginners notice |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | 05:30 – 14:30 | Often quieter for EUR and GBP pairs |
| London | 13:30 – 22:30 | Usually the deepest liquidity of the day |
| London–New York overlap | 18:30 – 22:30 | Often the biggest moves; US data releases |
| New York | 18:30 – 03:30 (next day) | Active early, quieter after London closes |
From April to October, London and New York start one hour earlier in IST. The full timetable, including summer times and gold hours, is in forex market timings in India.
What does forex trading cost?
The main costs are the spread (the gap between the buy and sell price), a commission on some account types, and swap (overnight financing) if you hold a position past the daily rollover. Swap can be a charge or a credit depending on the pair and direction.
| Account | Minimum first deposit | Spreads from | Commission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $50 | 0.9 pips | None |
| Raw Spread | $250 | 0.1 pips | $3.50 per lot per side |
| Zero Spread | $750 | 0.0 pips | $5.50 per lot per side |
Standard has no commission, so its cost is built into the spread. Spreads are quoted “from” and can widen around news and during quiet hours. Two more points from the account terms: an inactivity fee of $50 per month applies after 90 days without activity, and the Customer Agreement does not permit scalping or arbitrage. Compare all three on the accounts page.

- Start small. Deposit by UPI from $50 into a Standard account and trade micro lots while you learn how live trading feels.
What mistakes do beginners make most often?
Most early losses come from a handful of habits that are easy to spot in a journal:
- Trading too big – using high leverage to open positions the balance can't absorb.
- No stop loss – leaving a losing trade open in the hope it turns around.
- Trading the quiet hours – wider spreads and few moves in the late-night and early-morning IST hours.
- Ignoring the news – being caught by a US data release. Keep the economic calendar open.
- Skipping the demo – learning the platform's buttons with real money.
- Chasing losses – doubling the size after a loss to win it back.
Forex trading carries a high risk of losing money. Only trade with money you can afford to lose, and ask a chartered accountant how trading income is taxed in your situation.
