ABOUT

About US Dollar Index

The US Dollar Index, commonly known as DXY and labelled USDX here, measures the US dollar against a weighted basket of other major currencies. It is quoted in index points rather than as an individual currency pair. A rising index indicates dollar strength against that basket, while a falling index indicates weakness.

Unlike a currency pair, which compares the dollar with a single counterpart, USDX combines several currency relationships into one benchmark. Its weighting gives the euro a particularly strong influence, so it is not an equally balanced measure of global dollar performance. This makes the basket’s composition important when interpreting index movements.

On Xellion’s MT5 platform, USDX is traded as a CFD, allowing a position to be long or short without owning the underlying asset. The contract size is 1 × index, expressed in USD per point. Trading is available nearly 24 hours, Monday to Friday, with a daily break; leveraged trading magnifies both gains and losses.

FAQ

USDX questions

Are DXY and USDX different indices?

DXY and USDX are commonly used names for the US Dollar Index. Here, USDX identifies the instrument offered as a CFD. The index tracks the dollar against a weighted currency basket rather than measuring it against every currency.

Why do euro movements matter for the US Dollar Index?

The euro has a substantial weighting in the index basket. Euro strength against the dollar therefore tends to weigh on USDX, while euro weakness tends to support it. Movements in the other basket currencies also contribute to the overall result.

When can USDX be traded on Xellion?

USDX trading is available nearly 24 hours, Monday to Friday, with a daily break. Activity is generally greatest during US and European market hours. Trading availability does not imply uniform liquidity, and market conditions can differ across sessions.

What does the USDX contract size mean?

The stated contract size is 1 × index, expressed in USD per point. This links changes in the index level to the CFD’s monetary value. A position’s profit or loss depends on its size, direction, price movement and applicable trading costs.
