ABOUT

About Natural Gas

Natural gas is quoted in US dollars per million British thermal units (MMBtu), with the US Henry Hub price in Louisiana as the main reference. Gas is used for heating, power generation and industry, and is increasingly shipped worldwide as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Gas demand is strongly seasonal and weather-driven: cold winters and hot summers raise consumption, while mild weather leaves more gas in storage. Combined with limited short-term storage and production flexibility, this makes natural gas one of the more volatile commodities.

On Xellion's MT5 platform natural gas is traded as a CFD. One lot is 10,000 MMBtu, and you can trade price moves in either direction.

What moves the price

  • Weather forecasts for heating and cooling demand
  • Weekly US storage reports
  • US production levels
  • LNG export demand from Europe and Asia
  • Hurricanes affecting Gulf Coast production and export terminals

FAQ

NGAS questions

Why is natural gas so volatile?

Demand swings with the weather, while supply and storage cannot adjust quickly. Forecast changes, storage surprises and export disruptions can therefore move the price sharply in a short time.

What is the weekly storage report?

Every Thursday the US Energy Information Administration reports how much gas was added to or taken from US storage. Traders compare it with expectations, and a surprise can move prices quickly.

What does a $0.001 move in natural gas mean for one lot?

One lot is 10,000 MMBtu, so a $0.001 move changes the value of one lot by $10, and a $0.01 move by $100.

How do the seasons affect natural gas?

Gas is usually stored during the milder spring and autumn months and drawn down in winter. Prices often react to how full storage is going into winter and to forecasts of unusually cold or hot weather.
