About UK 100 (FTSE 100)
The FTSE 100, traded as UK100, tracks the 100 largest companies by market value listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is heavy in energy, mining, banking, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.
Many FTSE 100 companies are multinationals that earn much of their revenue overseas, so the index often responds to commodity prices and global growth as much as to the UK economy. A weaker pound can lift the value of those foreign earnings.
On Xellion's MT5 platform UK100 is traded as an index CFD, letting you trade the UK's leading companies in either direction with one position.
What moves the price
- Oil and metal prices, given the weight of energy and mining stocks
- Bank of England policy
- The British pound
- Global growth and demand from emerging markets
- UK inflation and political news

UK100 questions
Why does a weaker pound often help the FTSE 100?
Many FTSE 100 companies earn in other currencies. When the pound falls, those overseas earnings are worth more in pounds, which can support share prices.
What is one point of UK100 worth on one lot?
The contract size is 1, so each one-point move in UK100 changes the value of one lot by £1, converted into your account currency.
When is UK100 most active?
The CFD trades nearly 24 hours on weekdays, with the busiest period during the London Stock Exchange session, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. UK time.
Is the FTSE 100 the same as the UK economy?
Not exactly. Because many of its companies operate globally, the index reflects worldwide commodity prices and growth as well as conditions in the UK.
