ABOUT

About Euro / Canadian Dollar

EUR/CAD is the exchange rate between the euro and the Canadian dollar. The price shows how many Canadian dollars one euro buys: when EURCAD rises, the euro is strengthening against the Canadian dollar; when it falls, it is weakening.

EUR/CAD is a cross pair: neither side is the US dollar, so its price reflects the balance between the euro area and Canada directly. The euro is the shared currency of the euro-area countries and is the second most widely held reserve currency. The Canadian dollar is tied closely to oil, one of Canada's main exports, and to the US economy, its biggest trading partner.

On Xellion's MT5 platform EURCAD is traded as a CFD, so you can go long or short without exchanging either currency. One standard lot is 100,000 euros, and one pip is 0.0001.

What moves the price

  • The gap between interest rates set by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada, and expectations for where they go next
  • Euro-area inflation and growth data, especially from Germany
  • Business surveys such as the euro-area PMIs
  • Crude oil prices
  • Canadian jobs and inflation data
  • Trade flows and major economic releases from the euro area and Canada

FAQ

EURCAD questions

What does the EURCAD price mean?

It is the number of Canadian dollars needed to buy one euro. A rising price means the euro is gaining against the Canadian dollar; a falling price means it is losing ground.

When is EURCAD most active?

EURCAD trades around the clock on weekdays, but it is usually busiest during the London and New York sessions, and especially in the hours when the two sessions overlap. The forex market hours tool shows those sessions in your local time.

How much is one pip worth on EURCAD?

A pip on EURCAD is 0.0001. On one standard lot of 100,000 euros that is 10 CAD per pip, converted into your account currency. The pip calculator works it out for any lot size.

How much margin do I need for one lot of EURCAD?

Margin is the position value divided by your leverage. One lot is 100,000 euros, so at 1:500 you need 200 EUR and at 1:100 you need 1,000 EUR, converted into your account currency. Leverage up to 1:2000 is available depending on your account; the margin calculator gives the exact figure.
