Retail sales
Retail sales measure sales by retailers over a specified period and provide an indicator of consumer demand for goods. Coverage varies by country, and headline figures are often not adjusted for price changes, so higher sales values do not necessarily mean more goods were purchased.
In a hypothetical report, retail sales values rise while the quantity of goods sold stays unchanged because shoppers pay higher prices.
