On-balance volume
On-balance volume (OBV) is a cumulative indicator that adds a period's volume when the close rises and subtracts it when the close falls; unchanged closes leave it unchanged. It compares volume patterns with price trends. Where only tick volume is available, it reflects price-update activity rather than traded quantities.
Starting from a hypothetical OBV of 1,000, an up-close period with volume of 200 raises OBV to 1,200. A following down-close period with volume of 150 reduces it to 1,050.
