About Platinum
Platinum (XPTUSD) is a rare precious metal quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. Its biggest uses are in catalytic converters that clean vehicle exhaust, in jewellery and in a range of industrial and chemical processes.
Supply is concentrated in a small number of countries, led by South Africa and Russia, so mining disruptions, power shortages or sanctions can have an outsized effect. Interest in hydrogen fuel cells has added a longer-term demand story.
On Xellion's MT5 platform platinum is traded as a CFD, letting you take a view on the price in either direction without holding the metal.

XPTUSD questions
What is platinum used for?
Mainly in catalytic converters for vehicles, in jewellery, and in industrial uses such as chemicals, glass-making and electronics. It is also used in some hydrogen fuel cells.
Why can platinum supply be disrupted easily?
Most mined platinum comes from a handful of countries, so problems at mines, in power supply or in trade with a major producer can quickly affect the global market.
How is platinum different from gold?
Gold is driven mostly by investment and central-bank demand, while platinum depends much more on industry, especially the car sector. That makes platinum more sensitive to the economic cycle.
When is platinum most active?
Platinum trades on weekdays with a short daily break, and is usually most active during the London and New York sessions.
