About Ethereum
Ethereum is a blockchain platform for smart contracts — programs that run automatically on the network — and ether (ETH) is its native currency, used to pay transaction fees known as gas.
Ethereum hosts a large share of decentralised finance (DeFi), stablecoins and tokenised assets. In 2022 it switched from mining to proof of stake in an upgrade called the Merge, which changed how new ether is issued.
On Xellion's MT5 platform ETH is traded as a CFD quoted in US dollars. One lot is 1 ETH, and you can trade rising or falling prices without a wallet.
What moves the price
- Activity on the Ethereum network, including DeFi and stablecoins
- Network upgrades and changes to fees
- Flows into exchange-traded products holding ether
- Regulation of crypto and of staking
- The Bitcoin price and overall crypto sentiment

ETHUSD questions
What is the difference between Ethereum and ether?
Ethereum is the blockchain network; ether (ETH) is the cryptocurrency used on it. The ETHUSD price is the value of one ether in US dollars.
What was the Merge?
The Merge was Ethereum's 2022 move from proof-of-work mining to proof of stake, where validators lock up ether to secure the network instead of using mining hardware.
Do I need a crypto wallet to trade ETH CFDs?
No. You trade the price through your MT5 account, so you never hold the coins or manage private keys.
Does Ethereum move with Bitcoin?
Often, because overall crypto sentiment drives both, but ETH also reacts to its own network activity, upgrades and regulatory news, so the two can diverge.
