ABOUT

About Cocoa

Cocoa is an agricultural commodity produced from cacao beans, which are processed into cocoa butter and cocoa powder for chocolate and other food products. Benchmark futures prices are commonly quoted in US dollars or pounds sterling per tonne, depending on the exchange. The quotation basis therefore depends on the reference market.

Cocoa is distinctive because production is concentrated in tropical growing regions, with West Africa playing an important role in global supply. Cacao trees require particular growing conditions, and harvests can be affected by rainfall, temperature and crop disease. Fermentation, drying and transport also influence the quality and availability of beans reaching the market.

On Xellion's MT5 platform, Cocoa is traded as a CFD under the symbol COCOA. A position can be long or short without owning the underlying asset or taking delivery of cocoa beans. Trading hours follow the underlying futures exchange session, Monday to Friday. CFD exposure involves leverage-related risks, and losses can arise from adverse price movements.

FAQ

COCOA questions

When can Cocoa CFDs be traded on Xellion?

Cocoa CFD trading follows the underlying futures exchange session, Monday to Friday. Exchange holidays and session breaks can affect availability. The symbol information on Xellion's MT5 platform provides the applicable trading schedule.

Does a COCOA CFD position involve delivery of cocoa beans?

No. COCOA is traded as a CFD on Xellion's MT5 platform, providing exposure to price movements without ownership or physical delivery. Positions can be long or short, with gains or losses reflecting the direction of the price movement relative to the position.

Why does West African weather matter for cocoa prices?

West Africa is an important cocoa-producing region, so growing conditions there influence supply expectations. Insufficient rainfall, excessive moisture or unsuitable temperatures can affect flowering, bean development and harvesting, while wet conditions can also contribute to crop disease.

How does chocolate demand affect the cocoa market?

Chocolate manufacturers use cocoa butter and cocoa solids, linking consumer demand to bean processing requirements. Cocoa grinding activity offers insight into processing demand, although inventories, purchasing schedules and changes in product recipes can complicate the relationship between chocolate sales and cocoa prices.
