Soft commodities
Soft commodities are agricultural products typically grown rather than mined, with common market examples including coffee, cocoa, sugar and cotton. The category's boundaries vary, and grains are often treated separately; weather, crop disease and harvest conditions can strongly influence supply.
In a hypothetical growing season, disease reduces cocoa output while favourable weather improves coffee yields, causing the two markets to move differently.
