Segregated account
A segregated account is an account used to hold client money separately from a firm’s own funds under applicable rules. Segregation does not prevent trading losses or guarantee full recovery if the firm fails; protections depend on the jurisdiction and arrangements.
In an illustrative arrangement, a broker holds client money in a designated client bank account rather than in the account used for its operating expenses.
