Roll yield
Roll yield is the component of a futures investment's return associated with contract prices converging toward spot as exposure is rolled between expiries. For long exposure, backwardation generally supports positive roll yield and contango negative roll yield, assuming other conditions remain unchanged.
In a hypothetical backwardated market, a replacement contract bought at $77 rises toward an unchanged $80 spot price as expiry approaches, illustrating positive roll yield.
