Producer price index
A producer price index, or PPI, tracks changes in the selling prices received by domestic producers for covered goods and services. It measures inflation at the producer level rather than consumer checkout prices; coverage and methodology vary by country.
In a hypothetical report, producer prices rise as manufacturers charge more for their output. Consumer prices need not rise equally if retailers absorb some costs.
