Initial jobless claims
Initial jobless claims count new applications for unemployment benefits during a reporting period. The widely followed US release is weekly and provides a timely indicator of layoffs, but it does not measure all unemployed people or guarantee that applicants receive benefits.
In a hypothetical weekly release, initial claims increase from 200,000 to 215,000. That is 15,000 additional new benefit applications, not necessarily 15,000 additional benefit recipients.
