Forward guidance
Forward guidance is communication by a central bank about the likely future direction of monetary policy. It can depend on economic conditions or specified timeframes and aims to shape expectations, rather than necessarily committing the bank to a fixed course.
In a hypothetical statement, a central bank says rates may remain unchanged until inflation moderates. Unexpected price pressures could lead it to revise that guidance.
