Balance of payments
The balance of payments is a statistical record of transactions between an economy's residents and non-residents over a period. It comprises the current, capital and financial accounts; double-entry accounting balances the system in principle, while published data include a statistical discrepancy.
In a hypothetical transaction, a resident exports machinery and receives payment into a foreign bank account. The export and increase in foreign deposits generate corresponding accounting entries.
